It typically grows in wet meadows, along stream banks, and in moist, open areas. The plant can reach 3-5 feet tall and features slender, erect stems with opposite, lance-shaped leaves. Its small, tubular flowers are blue to purple and bloom in tight, elongated spikes from midsummer to early autumn.
